Object and background scene stimuli were created by Joshua Goh at the University of Illinois. The stimuli consists of indoor and outdoor objects and scenes obtained from various sources. Objects were placed within the scenes so that the pictures appeared congruent. The picture stimuli are grouped so that are four conditions in which objects and scenes were selectively repeated or changing.
The four conditions are as follows.
OO: Old Object, Old Background - only one picture of an object against a background. ON: Old Object, New Background - the same object is repeated against four changing backgrounds. NO: New Object, Old Background - four changing objects are presented again a repeated background. NN: New Object, New Background - both objects and backgrounds were changed across all four pictures.
