Comparison Statistics

The following files contain complete comparison statistics for all Culture-by-Age group comparisons, and all 105 categories:

   Hellinger Affinity, [-1, 1]

   Jensen-Shannon Entropy, [0, 1]

   Spearman Rank-Order Correlation, [-1, 1]

   Pearson Correlation, [-1, 1]

The correlation measures are sensitive to which items are included in the analysis.  Cutoff values of 1% and 2% (of percentage of subjects mentioning) are used, and are found on separate tabs.  The Hellinger and Jensen-Shannon measures on each sheet are identical, since they require no such cutoffs for their calculation.

   Affinities and Correlations (HTML)

Given n items, if the observed proportions in each of two groups are given by (p1, p2, …, pn) and (q1, q2, …, qn), then then the Hellinger Affinity is given by .

The Jensen-Shannon (JS) measure depends on the well-known Kullback-Leibler Divergence, defined for any two sample probability distributions as.  If r is the average of p and q, then the Jensen-Shannon Entropy is given by ; it is thus the mean divergence of two distributions from their own average.

The Pearson and Spearman correlations are calculated in the usual manner.  Greater detail on these measures, formulas for calculation and the advantages of using each can be found in the article below.
